RO Antiscalants: Protecting Membranes That Cost More Than the Chemical Ever Will
An industrial RO membrane bank can cost lakhs; the antiscalant protecting it costs a few thousand rupees a month. Yet under-dosing and wrong product selection remain the leading causes of premature membrane fouling in Indian plants.
What antiscalants actually do
As RO concentrates feed water, sparingly-soluble salts — calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate, silica — exceed saturation at the membrane surface. Antiscalants delay crystal nucleation and distort crystal growth so the concentrate carries supersaturated salts out to reject before they deposit. Different chemistries target different scales, which is why product selection starts from your water analysis, not a catalogue.
Dosing done right
Typical doses run 2–5 ppm against feed flow, injected before the cartridge filters for mixing. Oversimplified 'one pump setting forever' dosing fails when feed water changes seasonally — re-validate after monsoon. Watch normalised permeate flow and differential pressure: a 10–15% decline is your cleaning trigger, not an excuse to raise dose.
