Surface Treatment Chemicals Explained: From Degreasing to Top Coat
Every finished metal surface — plated, painted or powder-coated — is the product of a tank sequence, and each tank exists to fix a specific problem. Understanding the sequence turns mysterious line defects into diagnosable steps.
Stage by stage
Degreasing removes oils so water can touch metal. Pickling/de-rusting dissolves oxide so chemistry can reach fresh surface. Activation (acid dip or conditioner) removes the microscopic passive film that forms in seconds. The functional stage — plating, phosphating or conversion coating — builds the layer you're paying for. Post-treatment (passivate, sealer, RP oil) protects that layer until and beyond assembly.
Why rinses are stages too
Half of surface treatment defects are rinse defects: alkali dragged into acid, acid dragged into passivate, hard-water salts drying on parts. Counterflow rinsing and scheduled dumps cost little and prevent the contamination chain reaction that ruins downstream tanks.
Diagnosing by sequence
Water breaks on parts → cleaning stage. Coating won't form or adheres poorly → activation or contamination. Coating forms but fails corrosion test → functional bath balance or post-treatment. Working backwards through the sequence finds most problems in one shift.
