Procurement
The Complete Chemical Procurement Guide for Indian Factories
Chemical procurement sits at an awkward intersection: technical enough that purchase teams can't fully specify it alone, commercial enough that plant teams shouldn't run it alone. This guide walks the full cycle as we see it from the supplier side of our B2B relationships across Indian industry.
1. Specify before you solicit
A quotation is only comparable if the specification is fixed: chemical name AND grade AND packing AND delivery point. 'Caustic soda price?' produces five incomparable numbers. 'Caustic flakes 98%, 25 kg bags, delivered Ghaziabad, 2 MT/month' produces a real market picture in one round.
2. Qualify the vendor, not the quote
Check GSTIN and filing regularity, demand a batch COA from a recent lot, ask which manufacturer the material originates from, and test a technical question. Twenty minutes of qualification prevents the classic third-lot quality slide.
3. Structure the relationship
Move recurring items to rate contracts with agreed revision triggers. Consolidate the long tail with one accountable vendor. Keep a qualified backup for the two or three items that can stop your line. Agree credit terms in writing after the third clean transaction, not the first.
4. Audit the flow, not just the price
Quarterly: reconcile HSN consistency, check COA files are complete, review stockout incidents and near-misses. The cheapest chemical programme is the one where nothing ever goes wrong loudly.
