Safe Chemical Storage for Factories: A Practical Compliance Primer

Most industrial chemical incidents are storage incidents: incompatible materials stored together, corroded containers, missing labels. Getting storage right is cheaper than any accident and simpler than most factories assume.

Segregation is rule one

Acids away from alkalis; oxidisers (nitrates, peroxides, chromic acid) away from flammables and organics; cyanides strictly isolated from any acid. Physical separation — different rooms or bunded zones, not just different shelves — is the standard inspectors expect.

Containment and condition

Secondary containment (bunds, spill pallets) should hold 110% of the largest container. Inspect drums and carboys monthly for corrosion and bulging, keep original labels intact, and never decant into unlabelled or food containers — the single most common cause of serious exposure.
