MSDS, COA, TDS: The Three Documents Every Chemical Buyer Should File
Three documents travel with professionally supplied chemicals, and each answers a different question. Knowing which to demand — and filing them — protects your people, your process and your audit record.
COA — is this batch what I paid for?
The Certificate of Analysis states measured values for the specific batch: assay, impurities, physical parameters. It is your acceptance criterion at the gate and your evidence trail when a process problem needs tracing to a material change.
MSDS — how do I handle it safely?
The Material Safety Data Sheet (now SDS) covers hazards, PPE, first aid, storage compatibility, spill response and disposal. Regulations expect it to be accessible where the chemical is stored and used — not in a manager's inbox.
TDS — how do I use it?
The Technical Data Sheet describes application: operating windows, dosing, bath make-up, compatibility. For process chemicals like brighteners and passivates, the TDS is where performance promises live.
