Safe Storage of Industrial Chemicals: A Factory Checklist

Most chemical incidents in factories trace to storage, not use. The good news: safe storage is a checklist discipline, not a capital project. Here's the list we share with customers setting up or auditing a chemical store.

Segregation (the non-negotiables)

Acids apart from alkalis. Oxidisers (nitrates, chromic acid, peroxides, hypochlorite) apart from flammables and organics. Cyanides isolated from every acid, in a locked area. Flammable solvents in their own ventilated zone away from ignition sources. Separation means walls or bunded distance — not adjacent shelves.

Containment, condition, climate

Bunds or spill pallets holding 110% of the largest container. Monthly inspection for bulging, corrosion and label damage. Drums off direct sunlight — UV and heat cycles shorten container life and raise pressure in volatile products. Never decant into unlabelled or food containers.

The paper the inspector asks for

Chemical inventory register, MSDS accessible at the store (not in an office cabinet), spill kit and eyewash matched to stock, trained-person register. Five documents, one afternoon to organise, and most statutory storage findings disappear.
