But the first decision every plating shop faces is chemistry: acid chloride zinc or alkaline non-cyanide zinc? Both produce sacrificial zinc coatings, yet they behave very differently on the line and on the balance sheet.

Where acid zinc wins

Acid zinc plates fast — current efficiencies above 95% mean thicker deposits in less time, and it plates directly onto cast iron and hardened steel that alkaline baths struggle with. Deposits are brilliant straight out of the bath, which is why barrel platers of fasteners and small hardware overwhelmingly run acid chloride systems.

Where alkaline zinc wins

Alkaline non-cyanide zinc distributes metal far more evenly across complex shapes. A bracket with deep recesses that shows 3:1 thickness variation in acid zinc might hold 1.5:1 in alkaline. For automotive parts with salt-spray specifications tied to minimum thickness at the worst point, that distribution saves real money in zinc metal.

The practical answer

Many successful shops run both — acid for barrels and simple racks, alkaline for geometry-critical work.
