Bright Nickel Bath Troubleshooting: Pitting, Dullness and Poor Coverage

Bright nickel is the backbone of decorative plating, and its defects are wearily familiar: pitting, dull deposits, poor low-current-density coverage, peeling and burning. After years of helping customers rescue baths, these are the patterns we see most.

Pitting

Round, shiny pits usually mean gas pinning from low wetting agent — check surface tension and dose anti-pit. Irregular dark pits point to organic or metallic contamination: carbon-treat, then dummy-plate at low current density. Persistent pitting after both suggests iron above 100 ppm; high-pH precipitation or a proprietary purifier is the cure.

Dullness and haze

Uniform dullness is almost always brightener depletion or imbalance — run a fresh hull cell panel and re-dose incrementally rather than by guesswork. Hazy 'clouds' that buff off suggest chloride imbalance or temperature drift outside 55–65°C.

Poor low-CD coverage

Grey or bare recesses come from metallic contamination (zinc, copper) plating preferentially at low current density. Dummy plating at 0.2–0.5 A/dm² for several hours cleans most of it. Prevention: keep dropped parts out of the tank.
