Electroless Nickel Plating: Why Uniformity Is Worth Paying For
Electroless nickel (EN) deposits nickel-phosphorus alloy by autocatalytic chemical reduction — no external current. The consequence is its superpower: absolutely uniform thickness on threads, bores, internal channels and complex geometry where electroplating would build edges and starve recesses.
Where EN wins
Hydraulic components, moulds and dies, pump internals, connectors, and any part with tight dimensional tolerance after coating. Mid-phosphorus EN (6–9% P) balances hardness and corrosion resistance; high-phos (10–12% P) gives the best salt-spray and chemical resistance; heat-treated EN approaches hard-chrome hardness.
Running a stable bath
EN baths are living systems: metal turnovers, pH and temperature discipline decide plating rate and deposit quality. Replenish little and often, filter continuously, and retire baths on schedule rather than pushing one more turnover into roughness problems.
